On June 25, 1997...
The United States Supreme Court, in a 6 to 3 decision, declared
the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 unconstitutional
as applied to the states. The majority opinion in the case of
City of Boerne, Texas, v. Flores was handed down by Justice Anthony
M. Kennedy.
In response to the High Court's decision, members of Congress
as well as state legislators across the country are considering
ways in which to restore the protection of religious rights.
The following states
have RFRA laws on their books:
Alabama;
Arizona; Connecticut; Florida; Idaho; Illinois; New Mexico; Rhode Island;
South Carolina; Texas
